Jawando to Seek Investigation of Officers
Councilmember Will Jawando told a group of protesters that he wanted an investigation into all the officers involved in the questioning of several African-American men for trespassing at a Silver Spring McDonalds.
In last week’s incident, a female police officer can be heard saying the N-word on a recording made by one of the men and on her own body camera footage.
Jawando, addressing about 80 protesters in front of the Silver Spring police district station, said he also would seek the body camera footage of all the officers who took part in the questioning.
He also said he would ask for all the trespass orders and where they have been written in the past two years.
Jawando said he would make formal requests for the information in a letter to Acting Chief Russ Hamill.
“It’s not all of the officers. But when you have a culture, it’s hard to speak up, “ Jawando said.
The protesters, maybe about 80, gathered outside the Silver Spring police district station. They started at the White Oak Library about two blocks away, walking and chanting to the police station.
Speakers at the police station recounted other run-ins with police. Samir Ahmed described being questioned by police even though he helped get a drunken neighbor to his apartment.
Ahmed’s story made headlines when it occurred last November.

Then, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich called on a review of police procedures.
