Marylanders to Get $600 Per Week on Top of Current Unemployment Benefits

The Maryland Department of Labor saw more than 108,000 unemployment insurance claims over the past week, and 240,000 in the past month. That’s more than the number of claims filed total in 2019, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference Friday.

“These are not just numbers. Each one of these represents a struggling Marylander,” he said.

The state plans to start a new Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, or a “600+ Program,” by the end of next week, said state Department of Labor Secretary Tiffany Robinson.

Under the program, everyone eligible for unemployment benefits ending the week of April 4 will get an extra $600 every week on top of their current benefits. They will get the extra money on the day they usually get their benefits.

Hogan announced that a state budget and hiring freeze is in place effective immediately. He said state spending across all Maryland government agencies must stop, except for COVID-19 spending and payroll for employees.

“Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot announced this morning that the state of Maryland is projecting a potential revenue loss of up to $2.8 billion for the fiscal year 2020,” Hogan said.

Hi, I was unemployed prior to the COVID 19 epidemic. Actually I was trying to start a self employment consulting business but it never got off the ground. I had received UI benefits last year that expired. I am hearing different advice that I can and cannot file for unemployment at this time. Can you help me understand my options? Please and thank you!

1 month no pay, waiting on unemployment is not a break. You need to direct that anger with your employer if you feel you deserve more, or quit so that somebody else can have your job..

Hi Nathan, the $600 program starts tomorrow (Friday) and you should see the extra money added on to your next regularly scheduled payment. I hope that helps.

The people that are getting the extra 600 are the people that got laid off first! Waitress, cooks etc, that happend long before April 4th so maybe that’s why they set a cut off date I’ve worked since I was 14 I’m now 28 I have to children and have never received help from the state, guess how much I get a week $150 for me and 2 kids that isn’t enough to pay rent let alone take care of 2 kids, so you ask why people that were laid off long before most of you complaining you guys just got laid off and are making way more than any waitress!

Hey guys, according to the payday which for me is the 7th and last time the 8th, I would assume the first additional check would hit on the 22nd, for me at least. That’s my pay Schedule. The checks 600 for Marylanders is suppose to go in to effect today but you’ll receive on your personal pay schedule along the your regular UI check.

    Here is the skinny.

Im a bartender and i applied for unemployment on the very first day, March 15.

I just got my card today. It gave me two weeks of state unemployment at $180 and because the $600 federal program kicked off in MD today, I got that also.

They are now paying that additional $600 amount retroactively for previous week.

    Best of luck everybody.

ok. two questions. Everything is centering around the April 4th date. for the dispersing of the 600. My effective date is April 5th, guessing that throws me in to another week for possible Unemployment payment plus the 600 dollars? The way the new information yesterday read…, from Gov Hogan, the new pandemic v$600 Payments Begin Today, Marylanders Eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Benefits Can Apply Next Friday April 24
Launching a New One-Stop Application to Allow All Eligible Marylanders to
File All Types of Claims Entirely Online this made me wonder since everything zeroed in on the 4th of April for those payments to happen on the next pay cycle, , and my date was April 5th, should I do another application next Friday for the $600?? Sorry for these questions, I am elderly…. Would appreciate any response for peace of mind, thank you.

Wow this is b******* if people are really getting an extra $600 a week and making more than what they ever did while there’s people out there still working that make their normal f****** paycheck it’s not right people are on employment shouldn’t get extra f****** money they should get what they’re paid and then get the stimulus check like everybody else unless you’re going to pay everyone else in the world who still out there working an extra $600 a week because we would all like an extra $600 on top of our f****** paychecks to it’s not right the ones out there working or the ones who are out there putting their lives in danger and leaving their families at home and fear and then the people who get to sit home and be safe make more that’s not right

Thank you for writing a good report. As some have said, if your job sucks, don’t expect Larry Hogan to fix that for you. If you hate your employer, organize, unionize, file compliants against the employer, vote for politicians that put people before corporate profits. It is very hard in this climate but don’t fight each other! Don’t pull others down with you. This is the time when corporations are looting the Treasury and consolidating power, but it is also a time when people are seeing clearly how the stsus quo sysyems are rigged and can band and stick together to demand changes.

Hello. I’m married with 5 children and I’ve been laid off since 3/23/20. I was able to file using the initial Net Claims site, but I’ve been u able to file for the past 2 weeks and after being in the air for 90 minutes this morning goon the One Beacon website, there’s no tab to file any missing weeks from 4/12 to present.

I’m very stressed and I cannot reach anyone by phone, my company went belly up (so not HR support available) and I’m blowing through savings so quickly it has me scared and confused how I am supposed to get this all squared away so I’m able to receive unemployment benefits. Please help. Thank you

Yes that is wrong that people will make more on unemployment. Now that they’re making more why would they want to go get the job back or go back to work I’m an essential employee and they’re making more than I do. I understand people need help in times like this but not to make out better .

I exhausted my unemployment benefits week ending 04-04-2020. I have filled for the extension of benefits.I have not received any benefits for over a month. the few times I was able to communicate with unemployment, they tell me I need to wait for the funds to be released to Maryland unemployment. My question is, Has the funds been released to Maryland? If not, Then when will the funds be released to Maryland? Thank You

I’m not a US citizen so I don’t qualify for the unemployment or the extra $600 every week. So now I’m putting myself at risk and work as I need to pay for stuff. I find it interesting that all my coworkers are home enjoying their unemployment plus $600 every week (which is more then what they actually earned). This isn’t fair Wyeth essential employees like me or rest who are put working cuz of their needs
