Five Things to Know Today, Nov. 17, in Montgomery County

It is Tuesday, Nov. 17, and it is National Transgender Awareness Week. The week aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by the transgender community.

Here are five things to know in Montgomery County:

1. Council in Virtual Session: Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9:30 a.m. The agenda includes recognizing NIH researcher Dr. Harvey Alter on his 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

2. Riemer, Jawando to Discuss Bill to Remove SROs:  Councilmembers Will Jawando and Hans Riemer are speaking to members of the media virtually at noon about Bill 46-20,  their legislation proposing the removal of school resource officers from Montgomery County Public Schools. The media briefing will be live-streamed on the Montgomery County Council’s Facebook page.

3. Montgomery County Energy Summit:  Montgomery County Energy Summit starts at 9:30 a.m. and this year the event is all virtual. Click here for information on what the summit has to offer and how to register.

4. COVID-19 Testing: Montgomery County is holding eight free testing clinics today. The schedule of clinics may be found here.

5. COVID-19 Listening Tours for Women: The Montgomery County Commission for Women, in partnership with the County Executive and members of the County Council, are hosting a series of virtual listing sessions, one of which is happening tonight at 7 p.m. The purpose of each session is to provide women in the community to share how they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tonight’s listening session focuses on the mid-county community and features Councilmembers Andrew Friedson, Will Jawando, and Hans Riemer.
