Women’s Democratic Club Discuss Priorities During Trump’s Administration
The Women’s Democratic Club of Montgomery County held a special meeting Thursday evening in Bethesda to discuss its priorities during Trump’s administration as well as strategies for the next election.
“Now more than ever with a Trump presidency looming, we must stand together,” said President Betsy Loyless, first vice president. “We must sustain ourselves as we work for better times ahead with political and electoral campaigns at the local, state and nation levels.”
Some residents in attendance say they decided to attend the meeting because they are concerned that women’s rights will not be a priority under the incoming administration.
“We have made great strides and we’ve had a president who has been really respectful of women’s rights,” said Montgomery County resident Lucy Freeman. “Suddenly, the world changed. We have different politicians coming in who are not a respectful of women’s rights.”
In addition to discussing their goals under the new administration, organizers are preparing members for the Women’s March taking place on Jan. 21 in Washington D.C.
“There are so many reasons why I am marching,” said Melissa Busch, a Montgomery resident. “The rhetoric around this campaign was so negative against women, minorities, immigrants, the disabled and that’s the rhetoric that is unacceptable. We’re better than that.”
Elected officials, State Senator Susan Lee (MD-16), State Del. Marc Korman (D-District 16) , and Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart were also in attendance to listen to residents’ concerns.
