Where to See the Pope in Washington, D.C.
The Archdiocese of Washington has released information about where you can see Pope Francis when he visits Washington, D.C. later this month.
The Pope will be in the Popemobile during a short parade route between the Ellipse and a portion of the National Mall on Sept. 23 after his meeting with President Obama at the White House. The Pope will travel along 15th Street, Constitution Avenue and 17th Street Northwest. Participants are invited to line the streets of the Ellipse and National Mall to cheer on Pope France as he drives by in the Popemobile.
The parade is scheduled to begin around 11 a.m. on Wednesday and access to the viewing area is on a first come, first serve basis.
The viewing area of the open motorcade route is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, however spectators will need to pass through security. Security gates will open for the Ellipse and the National Mall at 5 a.m. on September 23 and will close at 10 a.m. No one will be admitted into the area after that point. No food or drink may be brought in from the outside, but concessions will be available for purchase. Once inside the perimeter, attendees will not be allowed to leave and re-enter until the Popemobile tour is complete.
After the parade, there will be a jumbotron showing continuous live coverage, videos and commentary on Pope Francis, including his address to the U.S. bishops at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle and the Mass of Canonization for Blessed Junipero Serra later in the afternoon.
The Archdiocese is encouraging everyone to use the hashtag #PopeinDC when sharing photos and stories of the Pope’s visit.
