Need a statue of a Civil War soldier? Check Craigslist.
For more than a year, the county has been trying to find a place to locate a statue of a Confederate Civil War soldier that has stood outside the Rockville Red Brick Courthouse since it was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1913.
Because it was vandalized in 2015, County Executive Ike Leggett said he wanted it moved.
In September, Councilmember Tom Hucker wrote Leggett to oppose one of the potential sites for relocation: Jesup Blair Park in Silver Spring.
In his letter, Hucker said Silver Spring residents are proud of their diverse, multicultural community.
“Relocating a statue memorializing a Confederate soldier into a public park, particularly one in Silver Spring, seems tone-deaf and insensitive,” he wrote.
Leggett never wrote back.
So Hucker said he did what he thought was logical: “What would you do if it were in your garage, and you didn’t want it anymore? That’s how I looked at it.”
He put the statue on Craigslist.
Relocating the statue would have a cost, and that cost would likely take funding away from schools or parks, Hucker said.
The county is expected to release soon a request for proposals on what to do with the statue. An attempt to reach a Leggett administration spokesman was unsuccessful.
In his Craigslist ad, Hucker said he gave the statue a $1,000 value, but made sure anyone reading the ad knew it wasn’t his to sell; that the sale would have to be negotiated with the county executive’s office.
The ad was up a few weeks a few months ago, Hucker said. He didn’t keep a copy of the actual ad.
He got five or six responses, he said.
“In Montgomery County, we gravitate to solutions that cost money, and too often we don’t gravitate to creative solutions that don’t cost money. And I see that every week,” Hucker said.

Stop trying to remove and erase a huge part of this nations history. Not only is it disrespectful to the nation itself but it disrespects many of our ancestors who fought valiantly and stood for what they belived. No the civil war was not over slavery but it was actually over states rights, economics, and political intrest. By removing and trying to erase this vital part of our history you are causing much civil unrest the likes this nation would not like to see. You are cramming your agenda and views down the throats of every American past present and future and are very hypocritical.

Besides being an act of vandalism on a historical artifact, by advertising for sale an object he does not own Councilmember Hucker has commited a criminal act of fraud and should be impeached.
I’m ashamed to say I ever lived in Montgomery County. This is a disgraceful way to treat an historical monument, whether you support that aspect of history or not. This monument doesn’t claim that the Confederacy was right or promote slavery or racism. It was simply made to honor men from Montgomery County who fought for the Confederacy, men who probably still have descendants living in Montgomery County. Men like Colonel Elijah Viers White (from Poolesville, and who White’s Ferry is named after). This is how we treat our history now?? Rewrite it to take out the parts you don’t like??
And how can Mr. Hucker claim that ANY part of Montgomery County is a diverse, multicultural community? Doesn’t diversity mean that one is tolerant of cultures and opinions other than their own? Apparently not, according to the County Council. If you want to be a diverse community, you need to make room for ALL opinions and beliefs, not just the ones you approve of.
Montgomery County needs to get its actually together and figure out how to preserve history and not destroy it, or attempt to sell it on Craigslist.
I would love to purchase this statue that has historic history behind it and should not be destroyed in any way or shape but should be preserved for the ages to come this is history am ready to buy at a low cost and will move it my self and sign any form stating that this statue will be in safe keeping for all age to learn it history .and to enjoy . ex-military john Garcia 4946 heather pass san Antonio texas 78218 . 210=758-8594
