Hoggle Again Deemed Not Competent to Stand Trial
Catherine Hoggle, who faces two murder charges after the disappearance of her two young children, was deemed not competent to stand trial, a spokesman for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Circuit Court Judge Michael Mason made the determination in a status hearing.
Hoggle, 31, will be evaluated yearly; her next competency hearing will be Nov. 30, 2018, the spokesman, Ramon Korionoff, said.
“Assigning of competency is based on the medical diagnosis. And no one knows how things will change over the course of time in terms of a medical diagnosis,” her lawyer, David Felsen, said. “She is in treatment and the doctors will make their evaluation.”
Three years ago, Hoggle and her children — then 3-year-old Sarah and then 2-year-old Jacob — were reported missing. Two days later, someone called 911 to say she was walking along Century Boulevard and Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown, but there was no sign of her children.
Police charged Hoggle, who had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia, with neglect. She was held without bail and sent to Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center in Jessup, where doctors ruled her not competent to stand trial. The ruling has been reviewed periodically since.
In September, State’s Attorney John McCarthy charged Hoggle with two counts of murder, one for each child.
