The Montgomery County Planning Board on Thursday approved a sketch plan to build a 340-unit apartment complex across from Montgomery Mall in Bethesda.

The 75-foot-tall building will be located at the former Ourisman Ford location, at the intersection of Westlake Terrace and Motor City Drive, across the street from Montgomery Mall, in Bethesda.

The complex will have ground-level units on all four sides of the building with stoops. The main entrance will open onto a plaza at the corner of Westlake Terrace and Motor City Drive.

A parking garage for about 373 vehicles will have access from Motor City Drive.

This redevelopment project has a long history. A site plan was approved in 2009 for a mixed-use building with retail on the ground floor, but the project was never built.

Public open space of over 17,000-square feet will be located at the corner of Motor City Drive and Westlake Terrace intersection. The space will function as an entry space at the main entrance of the building and will include plants and seating. It is designed to encourage pedestrian and bicycle connections to the surrounding existing uses.

The project also includes two private courtyards, one with an outdoor swimming pool, and the other entirely enclosed within the residential building.

The planning board approved the sketch plan.
