5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 30, In Montgomery County

Today is Monday, Aug. 30, and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. First Day of School: Montgomery County Public Schools will welcome more than 160,000 students back for the new school year. Here is MyMCM’s recent coverage.

2. Council Media Briefing: Council President Tom Hucker and Vice President Gabe Albornoz are holding a media briefing today at noon to discuss efforts to reopen the Gwendolyn Coffield and Long Branch Recreation Centers.

3. Municipal Monday: The Mayor and Council of Gaithersburg meet virtually at 7:30 p.m.; the agenda may be found here. The Kensington Town Council meets at 6 p.m. for a work session.

4. Poolesville’s New Town Manager:  Former Gaithersburg City Manager Tony Tomasello assumes the job of City Manager for Poolesville today.

5. Road Projects Impact Beach Drive and Randolph Road: Beach Drive, between Kensington Parkway and Old Spring Road, is closed to replace the bridge over Silver Creek.  Construction for a new Pepco substation is scheduled to start this week. The work will disrupt traffic on Randolph Road between Parklawn Drive and Nebel Street in Rockville.
