Gaithersburg Aquatic Center Celebration (PHOTOS & VIDEO )
Gaithersburg city officials held a community grand reopening celebration for the newly renovated Gaithersburg Aquatic Center on Sept. 4. MyMCMedia’s Sonya Burke reports.
The pool, located at 2 Teachers Way, is now open for year-round lap and recreational swimming, swim lessons and water exercise.
Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz was joined at the podium before the ribbon cutting ceremony by School Board member Rebecca Smondrowski and Gaithersburg resident John Fleming who has utilized the facility for 27 years. Gaithersburg City Councilmember Jud Ashman and Cathy Drzyzgula also attended the festivities along with other staff members and residents.
Fleming said he was happy that the pool was back in business after it closed for nearly two years for repairs, following an earthquake, and then renovations. For over two decades, he has been a regular lap swimmer at the pool.
After the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, local youth made a splash by jumping into the pool.
The facility is owned by Montgomery County Public Schools and operated by the city of Gaithersburg after school, and when school is out of session. The pool features 25-yard lap lanes, two diving boards, an outdoor patio, full size lockers and a shallow water teach pool.
At today’s reopening celebration–which was highlighted by colorful balloons, happy kids jumping off the diving board and an appearance by mascot Coach G – there was also food, games and a DJ.
The cost of the renovations and repairs totaled $1.1. million and were shared by the city of Gaithersburg, MCPS and Montgomery County.
