5 Things to Know Today, Aug. 12, In Montgomery County

Today is Thursday, Aug. 12, and today we celebrate International Youth Day, National Middle Child Day, National Vinyl Record Day, and several more holidays. So, if you’re a middle child, of course you have to share your holiday with all these other holidays, right?

In the meantime, here are five things to know in Montgomery County:

1. Heat Emergency Alert: Montgomery County is under a Heat Emergency Alert until 8 p.m. The county issues the alert when heat index is forecast to be at least 105 degrees.

To stay safe in the heat, county leaders advise residents to drink plenty of water, avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, and wear proper protection like light-colored clothing and apply sunscreen if you must be exposed to the sun.

2. Media Briefing on Rent Relief: County Executive Marc Elrich will be joined by landlords and tenants to provide an update on the COVID-19 Rent Relief Program. The update, scheduled for 11 a.m., will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the CCM’s Facebook and Montgomery County Government’s Facebook.

3. County COVID-19 Testing and Vaccine Clinics: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at nine testing sites today. Health officials continue to stress the importance of testing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and the infectious delta variant. Anyone 12 years and older is eligible for a vaccine. Register online to make an appointment at a county run COVID-19 vaccine clinic. To find another vaccine clinic near you, go to Vaccines.gov.

4. Food Distribution: There will be a food distribution event at Oak Chapel Church, located at 14500 Layhill Road in Silver Spring, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

5. ICYMI: The Centers for Disease Control announced on Tuesday the COVID-19 vaccination is safe and effective for pregnant people. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky explains more in the Twitter thread below:
