5 Things to Know Today, April 27, In Montgomery County

Today is Tuesday, April 27 and it is Babe Ruth Day—a day especially important for Marylanders since the baseball legend was born in Baltimore. Anyway, here are five things worth knowing about in Montgomery County.

1. Council in Virtual Session: Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9 a.m. Here’s a full look at the agenda of the meeting. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a public hearing about Council President Tom Hucker’s proposal to double the taxes on electronic cigarettes. The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

2. School Board Meets: Montgomery County Board of Education’s policy management committee meets virtually at 3 p.m.; the school board’s committee on special populations also meets virtually at 10:30 a.m.

3. County COVID-19 Testing and Vaccine Clinics: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at nine testing sites today. Health officials continue to stress the importance of testing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Anyone 16 years and older is eligible for a vaccine. Pre-register online with county-run vaccine clinics or state mass vaccination sites.

4. MCPS Survey: Montgomery County Public Schools is planning to offer a virtual academy in addition to a regular 5 day a week learning curriculum for its 2021-2022 academic year. MCPS is asking families to complete an interest survey about MCPS virtual academy by May 1.

5. See Any Fawns Lately?:  Montgomery Parks is trying to better understand Montgomery Parks’ deer population. If you see a fawn in your yard or in a park call the parks’ ecology staff at 301-962-1352.
