Westside at Shady Grove Community Features Green Streets (VIDEO)
When you walk thru the new Westside at Shady Grove Metro community off Crabbs Branch Way and Shady Grove Road in Rockville, one of the first things you will notice is that the street trees are planted in concrete boxes along with other specialty plants.
Developer McLean Quinn, vice president of land acquisition and development for EYA, said these rain gardens help control storm water runoff along the urban streetscape.
“The state of Maryland and Montgomery County are cutting edge when it comes to how you treat the rainwater that falls on a site,” said Quinn. “When you are creating an urban site like this at Westside, we really wanted to think about how we could capture the rain water and do the treatment that is important for environment sustainability in a way that was compatible with the urban streetscape.”
These rain gardens also reduce the need for large bioretention ponds and swales at the site, Quinn explained.
