Here are some of our picks for arts and entertainment this weekend:
Art:
- The fifth annual A-RTS at Rockville Town Square Fine Art Festival takes place this weekend with hours on Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Festival includes the works of 165 jury-selected artists and live music.
- Strathmore Mansion currently has two exhibits on display through May 21, the 31st Biennial of the Creative Crafts Council and The Space Between.
- Glenview Mansion’s current exhibit features the work of four artists, including Jennifer Kahn Barlow, Sara Leibman, Coriolana Simon, and Barbara Bell. Works are on display through May 12.
- Gallery B’s May exhibit titled “May Daze and Abstract Nights” features the works of artists from Be Dot Gallery. The exhibit is open through May 27. The opening reception will be held Friday, May 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.
- BlackRock Center for the Arts hosts two exhibits this month. In the Kay Gallery works by Mike McConnell are on display through June 10. Alecandra Chiou’s mixed-media paintings are on display in the Terrace Gallery through June 3.
- The Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association presents a collection of multimedia works at Kentlands Mansion through July 7.
- “Modern Surrealists” exhibit opens at the Arts Barn Gallery May 5 and features the works of Marco Cuba-Ricsi, John Duke and Thomas Germer. The exhibit runs through July 4 with an opening reception planned for May 18.
- Waverly Street Gallery’s exhibit, Archetypes of Femininity, features sculptures by Cris Ianculescu and is on display through May 6.
- The Glen Echo Park Partnership operates three galleries with ongoing art exhibits. Find more information about their schedule by visiting the website, here. During the months of May through September, Glen Echo hosts Art Walk on the first Friday of the month with open studios and demonstrations throughout the park. Each month the event features different activities.
Family:
- A professional troupe of young Chinese acrobats perform at Montgomery College’s Cultural Arts Center Friday and Saturday.
- Learn about telescopes, make your own planetarium, and observe the Moon through telescopes at the Group Astronomy Night Friday evening. Recommended for children ages 6-10. Pre-registration is required.
- The Puppet Co. Playhouse production of Cinderella opens this week and runs through June 11 at Glen Echo Park.
- Adventure Theatre’s production of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp runs through May 21 at Glen Echo Park. Friday’s performance is sold out.
- Imagination Stage’s Saturday Song Circle scheduled for May 6 is an interactive musical experience recommended for children ages 1-3 and their families. Sunday Fun-day includes dramatic play activities, movement, music and visual art for 3-5 year-olds and takes place May 7.
- Imagination Stage’s production of The Jungle Book continues in Bethesda.
- Brookside Garden’s live butterfly exhibit, Wings of Fancy, runs now through Sept. 17.
- Explore the music of Baltimore-born singer Ethel Waters with Rochelle Rice at Strathmore’s family jazz session Saturday, May 6. Recommended for 3-8 year-olds.
Theater, Film & Conversation:
- Washington Post editorial writer, Charles Lane, will speak as part of the county libraries’ Contemporary Conversations series. Lane specializes in economic and fiscal policy. He is the author of “The Day Freedom Died: The Colfax Massacre, the Supreme Court and the Betrayal of Reconstruction” (2008) and “Stay of Execution: Saving the Death Penalty from Itself” (2010). County Executive Ike Leggett is the host. Registration required.
- Olney Theatre’s production of The Magic Play has been extended through May 14.
- Roundhouse Theatre’s production of the comedy OR, closes Sunday.
- Rockville Little Theatre presents Landford Wilson’s Book of Days at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville through May 14.
