Wall Breaking Ceremony for New Veterans Clinic in Gaithersburg (VIDEO)
Local, state and federal officials gathered this week for a wall-breaking ceremony, with golden hammers, at the future site of a community clinic for veterans in Gaithersburg.
The new clinic at 15810 Gaither Drive in Gaithersburg is scheduled to open in Dec. of 2017 and it will provide healthcare to more than 44,000 veterans in Montgomery County.
U.S. Senator Ben Cardin said this new clinic is “very important” because it provides a clinic for veterans in their community. Congressman Chris Van Hollen agrees. He said the clinic will serve veterans who need treatment and its location should make traveling for care much more convenient.
“This medical center is going to provide tremendous convenience and terrific care,” said Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal.
Inside the 11,600 square feet clinic, veterans will find primary care as well as mental health clinics. In addition, there is space for tele-health, patient education, hearing aid fittings and specialty care.
Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz said he is proud the clinic is located in his district.
“It is certainly something we should have had years ago,” said Katz.
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is a veteran and he has mapped out the route from him home in Burtonsville along the ICC to the clinic. Leggett said the clinic is an opportunity to make sure local veterans get the services they need.
“It is long, long overdue,” Leggett said.
According to a news release, expanding health care access to veterans in Maryland is a high priority for the Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which operates five other community clinics in the the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
