Local Leaders Launch Fix I-270 Now Coalition (PHOTOS & VIDEO)
Local leaders have launched a new coalition entitled, Fix I-270 Now, to widen and improve traffic conditions along I-270.
“The gridlock and endless congestion on I-270 is one of the biggest problems facing Maryland, severely impacting the quality of life and economic competitiveness of one of our most critical job creating regions,” said U.S. Representative John Delaney, who is chairing this effort.
Delaney said the idea is to get all the stakeholders to come together to make I-270 the number priority for Montgomery County, Frederick County and the state of Maryland.
The first step, according to local leaders, is calling for the completion of necessary feasibility studies from the state that are required to begin the process and to secure federal funding.
U.S. Representative Chris Van Hollen, who is running for a senate seat in the upcoming election, was one of the federal leaders at the news conference.
“We want to make it clear that this is a priority for Montgomery County, for Frederick County, for our region, to finally address traffic congestion on the I-270 corridor,” said Van Hollen. “It just becomes a parking lot during rush hour.”
“This coalition of local and regional leaders and federal officials is key to really bringing the federal government’s attention to and money to the problem of how we are actually going to get action on fixing 270,” said County Council President Nancy Floreen. “Hopefully we will make some progress on that.”
