The committee chose León Rodríguez, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director, to honor his commitment to serving the community.

“We are delighted that Director Rodríguez will honor us by accepting this award. He served as county attorney for Montgomery County for three years and his impeccable public service record in our county served to catapult him to leadership positions at the national level. He is a champion advocating for human rights and during his tenure as USCIS Director, he has forged meaningful community partnerships to help permanent residents learn more about the citizenship and naturalization process,” said Lorna Virgili, Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala Founder.

According to a news release, Rodríguez became USCI director in 2014- a position that needs to be confirmed by the U.S Senate. He also served as director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Service, chief of staff and deputy assistant attorney general for civil rights division at the Department of Justice, and county attorney for Montgomery County from 2007 to 2010.

The Montgomery County Executive Hispanic Gala is nonprofit organization that fundraises to support Latino students in Maryland.  The gala’s committee also announced the 60 students to receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship at the annual Hispanic Gala scheduled for Sept. 10 at the Fillmore in Silver Spring. The celebration serves to off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Montgomery County.
