Maryland troopers made more than 9,300 traffic stops over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, between June 30 and July 4.

Police said the stops resulted in the arrests of 112 impaired drivers and thousands of citations, warnings and 888 equipment repair orders.

According to police, the extra enforcement resulted in fewer crashes this year compared to last year. There were 284 crashes this year, including three fatal crashes, compared to 495 total crashes last year.

The Maryland State Police continue to support the Maryland Department of Transportation’s campaign “Toward Zero Deaths.” According to a news release, these high visibility enforcement efforts are reducing the number of aggressive driving, motor vehicle crashes in which speed, alcohol and other driving violations are contributing factors to crashes on Maryland roads. Troopers say they will continue these initiatives throughout the year.
