Massive Fire at Rockville Apartment Complex (Video)
UPDATED More than 200 firefighters were called to the scene of a three-alarm fire on, April 1, that burned through an unoccupied apartment building at the Gables Upper Rock complex in Rockville. On April 2, fire officials said the apartment complex was a complete loss with damages estimated at between $15 million and $20 million. Firefighters remained on scene as they prepared for demolition later this week.
Pete Piringer, public information officer for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, reports a call from the alarm company came in about 4:15 a.m.
When units arrived on the scene they had heavy fire conditions coming from the upper floors of an unoccupied building that was under construction.
Piringer says the building was under construction and almost 90 percent complete. The apartment complex was expected to open in a couple of weeks.
“My guess is that at this point they might have to knock down the building. It was a total loss which will be millions of dollars,” Piringer said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Investigators have been unable to get into the building to determine the cause and origin of the fire but Piringer says, “there’s nothing suspicious at this point.”
