‘Taste the World’ Brings Hundreds to Silver Spring (Video & Photos)

The fourth annual “Taste the World in Fenton Village” festival attracted its biggest crowd yet, bringing hundreds of hungry patrons to more than two-dozen local restaurants in an effort to promote local restaurants in the area.

MyMCMedia’s Valerie Bonk has the story of how the event is helping local businesses in Fenton Village.

“There’s restaurants from all over the world that are here and so the whole idea is just to let people know about it and to promote it because a lot of the attention sometimes just goes up the street at Ellsworth Avenue but yet there’s so many other things to offer,” said event chair Susan Decker.

The event grew from just ten restaurants its first year and featured two entertainment stages for local bands to showcase their work.

“It’s just gotten bigger and bigger and bigger every year,” said Suzy Zusy, a member of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board and a title sponsor of the event. “The idea behind it was to support the local businesses and draw attention to the local businesses that were kind of floundering and weren’t getting a lot of attention from the County or the community. We want them to know how much we appreciate them being here.”

During the event, visitors travel from restaurant to restaurant and for $2, $3, $4 or $5 can sample appetizers and tasting plates filled with international fare.

The Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board and Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. co-host the event in collaboration with local small business owners and with the support of corporate sponsors and the County government.

“There’s a lot of development that’s going to happen in and around this area and so we want to make sure that the small businesses continue to strive and that stay here and that they are vibrant and getting people out and recognizing it,” said Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett. “I think is a good way in which to do that.”

Local restaurant owners and managers say they’re grateful for the chance to showcase their menus and attract new customers.

“I’ve participated for the last four years and it’s a good thing for us, marketing, showing the Ethiopian culture, the Ethiopian food, how Ethiopians succeed in Silver Spring so I’m very happy to participate,” said Solomon Abdella, owner of Abyssinia Restaurant on Georgia Avenue.

“It’s a way to get involved in the community, let the whole area know what we do at fire station, know that we’re here,” said Gabrielle Nicol, a manager at Fire Station 1 Restaurant and Brewing Company.

“It created a lot of excitement around here and we’re trying to keep the community inside of the the community and participate in the restaurants and businesses around,” said Raynold Mandizabal, the owner and chef at Urban Butcher.
