Styrofoam Ban Goes Into Effect This Year
This year marks the start of a complete ban on the use of styrofoam products in Montgomery County.
Take-out containers, bowls, cups, plates, trays, egg cartons and any other products made of styrofoam are banned for use within the county from January 1, 2016. Signed into law in January of last year, the ban prohibits the distribution and sale of styrofoam food service products. It also requires that food establishments begin using compostable or recyclable packaging by January 1, 2017. The ban also applies to supermarkets, coffee shops, vending trucks and other retailers.
Washington, D.C. also has a similar ban that went into effect on January 1st.
