This year marks the start of a complete ban on the use of styrofoam products in Montgomery County.

photo of polystyrene food containersTake-out containers, bowls, cups,  plates, trays, egg cartons and any other products made of styrofoam are banned for use within the county from January 1, 2016. Signed into law in January of last year, the ban prohibits the distribution and sale of styrofoam food service products. It also requires that food establishments begin using compostable or recyclable packaging by January 1, 2017. The ban also applies to supermarkets, coffee shops, vending trucks and other retailers.

Washington, D.C. also has a similar ban that went into effect on January 1st.

What should we do with styrofoam containers, like cups and egg cartons that we planned to re-use?

Hi Earl, you can put any styrofoam products in your regular trash. Here’s the guidance from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection.
