Second Chance Wildlife Center Hosts Baby Shower Fundraiser (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

UPDATED Dozens of residents turned out for a Baby Shower fundraiser to support Second Chance Wildlife Center located in Gaithersburg on May 1st.

Jim Monsma, executive director of Second Chance Wildlife Center, says that the organization takes care of thousands of baby animals a year and the cost adds up. He said the Baby Shower is one way to raise funds.

“Everything is focused around raising the funds and the supplies that we’ll need to take care of these little orphans,” Monsma said. “It’s not as easy as people think, it takes a lot of expensive food, a lot of equipment, a lot of knowledge,” he said.

The event featured a craft able for children and adults alike to build bird houses. Animals like a hawk and opossum were also brought in by Echoes of Nature for people to interact with. Native plants were also for sale.

“Planting native plants in your garden is very important for wildlife, as opposed to some of the more exotic things which [does] wildlife no good,” Monsma said. “We do whatever it takes to get them on their feet and back out in the wild,” he said.
