Rockville Kids Earn Bikes for Good Deeds

Rockville students in grades 1-3 have just a few more days to apply to earn a free refurbished bike by doing good deeds in the community.

The TERRIFIC Bikes program, run by the City of Rockville, Bikes for the World and The Rockville Bike Hub, is open to students in Rockville public or private schools or those who are home schooled.

Students must have a sponsor (such as a teacher or relative), and complete six responsible acts, such as perfect school attendance for one month or volunteering at a charitable organization for an hour. TERRIFIC stands for Trusworthy, Earnest, Respectful, Responsible, Involved, Fair, Industrious and Caring.

“This program encourages thinking about values, doing good things motivational things,” said Keith Oberg, executive director Bikes for the World and founder. “It teaches kids to identify an objective and work toward it.”

Last year about 30 Rockville kids got bikes through the program, Oberg said.

Participation forms are available at here and must be postmarked no later than March 31. Bike recipients will be recognized at the May 4 Mayor and Council meeting. Bikes will be distributed May 17.

Donate bikes to the program by dropping them off from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 at REI, 1701 Rockville Pike (at the rear entrance off Halpine Road). Bikes for the World accepts donations of bikes for its programming throughout the year. You can find more information here.
