Disasters happen more often than you think.

That’s the word from CEO Linda Mathes, of the American Red Cross, who says it is important to prepare for the summer storm season and other emergencies before they happen.

Nationally, she said the Red Cross responds to 70,000 disasters a year. She said most of those disasters are house fires. Locally, she said the Red Cross responds to about 500 disasters annually– everything from floods to fires and tornadoes to earthquakes.

“Effective disaster preparation can protect property, it can speed recovery, it can reduce disruption,  it can save lives,” said Mathes. “What do we need to do? Prepare.”

According to Mathes, every family should have an emergency plan and family members should assemble an emergency supply kit that will sustain them for three to five days.  Mathes noted that one recent survey indicated that only 28-percent of all families have an emergency preparedness kit.
