Penn State Returns to College Park

1993, that is the last time Penn State played a football game in the horse-shoe shaped stadium in College Park, University of Maryland.  Saturday, Penn State walked away with a 66-3 win ending Maryland’s football season.

Ask any Montgomery County high school counseling office to estimate the number of applications to a major four-year out of state university.  They and their graduating seniors will rank (and apply to) Penn State University (PSU) in the top three, hands down.  For many seniors, there are different reasons for sending in an application but for certain a great winning fall college atmosphere is one of them.

Add to the mix this past Saturday the fall Thanksgiving weekend, a large local alumni base, a short drive from Happy Valley and a top ranked B1G Ten PSU team and all of a sudden there is 50,000 plus in attendance for a College Park football game.

Unfortunately for Maryland it’s been a year of challenges circling around a healthy quarterback position and a season weary defensive staff. Hopes for a rebound next year are high and the coaching staff at Maryland are on the hunt in the DMV for talent players who can immediate impact.

So, between the on-field PSU highlights, I located some of the other local color that makes college football popular here in College Park, Maryland.
