MCDOT’s Preliminary Station Design for Bus Rapid Transit Along US 29

Montgomery County is adding Bus Rapid Transit service (BRT) to three congested traffic corridors, including MD Route 355, U.S. Route 29 and MD Route 586 or Veirs Mill Road. The goals of the BRT include improving transit, easing traffic congestion and spurring economic growth.

The BRT will function as a faster travelling option with limited stops. Buses will feature Wi-Fi, USB ports and priority signaling to reduce stops at red lights.

Construction is scheduled to start on the 13.5 mile stretch on U.S. Route 29 between Burtonsville and the Silver Spring Transit Center in 2018. Service is scheduled to begin in 2020 and will be the first of its kind in Maryland, according to a news release.

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) set six design goals for the BRT bus shelters:

1. Easy to find and use
2. Accessible
3. Safe and comfortable
4. Adaptable and Context Sensitive
5. Maintainable
6. A good life-cycle investment
