Northwest Wins Maryland 4A Championship Game (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

It was a shoot-out at the M&T Bank Stadium Friday night but in the end it was the Northwest Jags over Old Mill of Millersville to take the 4A state championship title.

This makes back-to-back championship titles for the Germantown team. The final score was 34-31.

Both teams struck quickly to start the game with a long touchdown drive and neither had success with the point after attempt. The two teams traded touchdowns, going into the half with Northwest up 20 to 17.

With just 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, both teams’ stands felt the championship trophy was within grasp as the Jags lead Old Mill by just two points, 26-24.  At nine minutes left and the lead was 34-24 in favor of Northwest. A quarterback keeper put Old Mill within three, but it wasn’t enough.

The Northwest team in the red zone, took a knee to end the game and collect their hardware.

Northwest Coach Mike Neubeiser told MyMCMedia after the game that he had seen Damascus High School’s team let a 21-0 lead slip away and cautioned his players to keep playing intense. Neubeiser said he knew his team had a target on their back coming off last year’s win at states, but he said he knew early on this team was prepared to repeat following the lead of his strong seniors.

Making a surprise appearance at the game was the Baltimore Ravens’ Jacoby Jones who told MyMCMedia he was making an appearance nearby and saw the lights on in the stadium. He said he was excited to watch the state championship game but wasn’t ready to pick a winner in the third quarter.

“This is what these guys work all summer for,” he said.
