Montgomery Reopens Historic Bridge in Silver Spring
The Talbot Avenue bridge — which connects Lyttonsville to Silver Spring — has been reopened after the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) completed repairs to a damaged support beam.
MCDOT closed the pedestrian bridge on Dec. 20 upon identifying the damaged beam. MCDOT worked with CSX to develop a repair plan, which CSX authorized. MCDOT completed repairs on January 6th and reopened the bridge to pedestrians on Jan. 7.
The Talbot Avenue pedestrian bridge runs over the CSX railroad tracks between Hanover Street and Lanier Drive.
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) and Purple Line Transit Partners plan to remove the existing Talbot Avenue bridge in the spring of 2019 to make way for construction of the Purple Line.
A new bridge will be constructed in its place. MCDOT has negotiated with MTA and secured their commitment to provide MCDOT with the main girders from the old bridge. MCDOT and MCNPPC are working with community leaders to develop a plan to incorporate the girders along the Capital Crescent Trail on property that MTA will provide to MNCPPC.
