International Transgender Day of Visibility Recognized in Montgomery County

Councilmember Evan Glass presented a proclamation to recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility at Tuesday’s council meeting.

For the past 10 years, Transgender Day of Visibility has been recognized nationally on March 31, but this is the first time it’s been officially recognized in the county.

Glass said this proclamation was especially important to him, as the first LGBTQ councilmember.

He said that as the search for a new police chief is underway, he’s spoken to County Executive Marc Elrich about the importance of making sure the decision is made considering what the impact will be on the LGBTQ community.

Glass said that he met with people in the LGBTQ community before Tuesday’s council meeting, and had a sign in the hallway directing people to the meeting that was torn down.

“Somebody clearly didn’t think that meeting was worth having, or didn’t want individuals going to it, and that’s right here in the Montgomery County Council building. So this conversation, this proclamation, is even more important because we have to change hearts and minds right here in our own building,” said Glass.
