Maryland resident Billy Hurley III, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, won his first PGA tournament Sunday at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda.
He scored a 72-hole score of 17-under-par 267, and earned a player’s prize of $1,242,000 and 500 FedExCup points.
Hurley was followed on the scoreboard by Vijay Singh, Jon Rahm, Bill Haas, Ernie Els, Webb Simpson, Harold Varnier III, Francesco Molinari, Robert Garrigus and Smylie Kaufman.
An emotional Hurley answered questions from reporters on the course after his big win. “It’s unbelievable,” he said.
He also teared up when talking about his late father. “I thought about him this morning… and had to kind of step away in the locker room by myself,” he said. “Thankfully, I was able to put that aside on the golf course and just play golf.”
Before this win, Hurley said he recently considered retiring from the game of golf. “Not much was going well, it was hard. And, that’s golf,” he said. Find out more in this MyMCMedia Extra video, below:
