Hundreds Turn Out for Rally Against Gun Violence (PHOTO)
Political leaders and activists came together for a rally against gun violence Sunday night in Rockville. Over 200 people turned out for the event at the steps of the Old Grey Courthouse.
According to Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger, the Montgomery County Police recovered 733 guns in 2012, 810 guns in 2013 and 1,054 guns in 2014. “We know how these guns end up in the wrong hands and there are some common sense legislative things we can do that will not impact the second amendment and law abiding citizens,” Manger said.
“We can be a voice to help bring attention to this challenge and make sure that we get our citizens united and to push for sensible gun changes so that we can end some of these acts of violence,” said Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett. We’re not going to end them all and we can do so without infringing on the rights of the second amendment and so our voices are here today to make sure we bring attention to the problem to make sure that our federal and state officials act accordingly.”
State and federal officials were present to give remarks and lend support at the rally. Congressman Chris Van Hollen said, “We need to mobilize political support to get Congress to act, the Speaker of the House, the old one Speaker Boehner and the new one Speaker Ryan, have refused to allow for a vote on any of these common sense gun measures. We need the public to rise up. This is part of an effort this evening to rally the public and it needs to be part of a national effort.”
Derwood resident Patty Larson is a supporter of stricter gun rules.
“A lot of people urged me to come and its one thing to do when there’s a lot more that needs to be done. I agreed with all the speakers and I am upset that we can not turn this around. I think it’s going to take a mass movement, more than what has happened before.”
Members of Maryland Shall Issue (MSI), a non-partisan organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement gun owners rights in Maryland, were on hand to answer questions about firearms.
Dan Blasberg, President of MSI said, “One of the things we don’t agree with is the use of the no-fly list to prohibit people. The reason for that is that there’s no due process for anybody to end up on the no fly list. Every other prohibited person, every other prohibited class for a firearm has the ability for due process to end up on it.”
The evening ended with the lighting of candles and singing of, “This Little Light of Mine,” in recognition for the lives lost to gun violence.
The Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, the City of Rockville, County Executive Ike Leggett, the Montgomery County Council and others sponsored the rally.
