Gaithersburg City Officials Plan to Make New School a ‘Win-Win’ for Residents

The Gaithersburg City Council voted unanimously Monday night to begin negotiations for building a new elementary school on Kelley Park. The council’s decision comes amid backlash from some residents who say the park should remain untouched.

Building a new elementary school on the city-owned land has sparked a heated debate among community members, but Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman said the city council’s vote only allows MCPS officials to conduct a feasibility analysis on park grounds.

“Our goal would be to work with MCPS to make it as much of a win-win as possible,” Ashman said. “There are some elements of a school at Kelley Park that could actually improve the area […] but we also know that we have this great amenity and want to preserve as much of it as possible.”
