Here are five things to know today, May 3, in Montgomery County:

1. Fallen heroes: Montgomery County police continues its annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Public Safety Headquarters, 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg.

2. Council meets Metro: The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority meets the Montgomery County Council’s Transportation Committee at 1:25 p.m. The subject is Metro’s budget and fare increases.

3. Committees: Other council committees are meeting as well. The Health and Human Services Committee meets at 9:25 a.m. The panel’s agenda includes a closed session on a grant to the National Philharmonic. The Education Committee meets 1:55 p.m.

4. Farmers market: The Shady Grove Farmers Market runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County campus at Key West Avenue and Broschart Road. The market, which is one of the first to open for the season, includes fresh local fruits and vegetables; plants; meat, eggs and poultry; pastries, pasta and bread; food trucks; jewelry; and art. Free parking.

5. Vandals strike: Dozens of cars in Montgomery Village were vandalized, and three teens have been charged by Montgomery County police.
