Five Things to Know for May 24 in Montgomery County

Today is Friday, May 24 and here is a rundown of five things to know in Montgomery County:

1. Commencements: Five schools hold graduation ceremonies today. Paint Branch High School, Burtonsville, will hold its graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. at the school. Stephen Knolls School, Silver Spring, will hold its graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24, also at the school. Poolesville High School will graduate the Class of 2019 at 10 a.m. at Mount St Mary’s University, Emmitsburg. Wheaton High School graduates the Class of 2019 at DAR Constitution Hall at 10 a.m. Gaithersburg High School will hold its graduation ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at DAR Constitution Hall.

2. Pools Open:  It’s Memorial Day Weekend and that means Montgomery County’s seven outdoor pools open Saturday, May 25 at noon. The Gaithersburg Water Park at Bohrer Park and the outdoor pools at Rockville Swim Center also open Saturday. The outdoor pools will be open on weekends and Memorial Day until June 16, the last day of school for MCPS students. At that time, they will also be open weekdays.

3. Flags for Our Heroes: The Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village Rotary Clubs are sponsoring an event at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bohrer Park — a tribute to the heroes in our lives, members of the military or first responders, teachers, coaches, mentors or anyone else who has been a hero in your life.

4. Amharic Language and Culture Program:  Children (all ages) are welcome to attend a session to learn about Ethiopian culture and the Amharic language. Saturday, May 25 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Gaithersburg Library.

5. Rockville Hometown Holidays: More than 30 bands, dance groups and children’s entertainers perform on four stages Saturday and Sunday. Local restaurants support Taste of Rockville and serve signature dishes both days. Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26 from noon to 8 p.m.

And one more thing: Monday is Memorial Day, a federal holiday for remembering and honoring people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Here are four events coming up in the County:
