Five Things to Know for June 6 in Montgomery County

It’s Thursday, June 6 and here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. 75th Anniversary of D-day: On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the invasion of Nazi-occupied France on the beaches of Normandy. Sandy Spring Museum commemorates the anniversary of D-Day with a series of programs on America’s weapons of war.

2. Community Forum on Policing: County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Will Jawando host a community forum on policing in Montgomery County. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences and concerns about current policies and actions to identify fguture priorities they wan to see for a new police chief. The forum takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Kennedy High School, 1902 Randolph Road in Silver Spring. An online survey is available to residents who may not be able to attend the forum.

3. Busy day for graduations: Northwest High School will graduate its seniors at 9 a.m. at the Xfinity Center in College Park. Blake High’s ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Mount St. Mary’s University. Einstein High holds their ceremony at 10 a.m. at DAR Constitution Hall. Walter Johnson High students graduate a the Xfinity Center in College Park at 1:30 p.m. Whitman High’s ceremony start at 2:30 p.m. at DAR Constitution Hall.

4. Planning Board Meets: The Planning Board meets at 9 a.m. with a full day of agenda items. The Board receives a briefing on the I-495 and I-270 managed lanes study at 11 a.m. from the Maryland Department of Transportation. Watch the meeting live, here.

5. Aspen Hill Greenway Pilot Project Public Workshop: Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) invites residents to attend a public workshop from 7 to 9 p.m., to learn about the Aspen Hill Neighborhood Greenway Pilot Project. The meeting will be held at A. Mario Loiderman Middle School at 12701 Goodhill Road in Silver Spring. The Greenway Project will explore ways to improve safety for people bicycling and walking between the Glenmont Metro Station and the Aspen Hill Shopping Center and North Gate Shopping Center.

And one more thing: Enjoy the reggae band Oasis Island Sounds this evening at Bethesda’s Veterans Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Smoke BBQ will have food and drink available to purchase.
