Five Things to Know For Jan. 3 in Montgomery County

It’s Thursday, Jan. 3, and here are five things you need to know:

1. Know Before You Go: Check out this guide to what’s open and what’s not during the partial federal government shutdown.

2. Student Board Member Nominations: Any student enrolled in a Montgomery County public school in grades 6 through 12 may nominate a sophomore or junior to serve as next year’s Student Member of the Board of Education. Deadline for nominations is Jan. 24.

3. New Year’s Blood Drives: Representatives from the American Red Cross will hold blood drives in Gaithersburg, Rockville and Silver Spring today. Register online, here. Walk-ins are accepted at the Gaithersburg and Rockville locations.

4. Documentary Screening: The documentary RBG about the life and work of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be shown at the Davis Library from 3 to 5 p.m.

5. Comic Convention Returns: The public libraries are hosting the third annual comic convention on January 19 at the Silver Spring Library. Elementary School-aged children are invited to a craft activity at the Kensington Park Library today to make their own superhero at 4:30 p.m. Learn about the MoComCon, here.
