Five Things to Know for Feb. 4 in Montgomery County

It’s Tuesday, Feb. 4 and it’s report card day at Montgomery County Public Schools. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Council in Session: The Montgomery County Council meets this morning at 9:30 a.m. Councilmember Will Jawando will give a proclamation to recognize Library Lovers Month. Here’s a look at the full agenda for the meeting.

2. Albornoz, Navarro Press Conference: Montgomery County Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz and Nancy Navarro are holding a press conference at 12:30 p.m. to denounce the Supreme Court’s public charge ruling. Albornoz and Navarro will urge congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform.

3. Community Meeting on Gaithersburg Park: The City of Gaithersburg is seeking input on replacing the playground equipment at Travis Park on Travis Avenue because the equipment is about 20 years old. There’s a community meeting about the equipment tonight at 7 p.m. at Watkins Mill Elementary School.

4. Freedom After 40 Years Enslavement: Jim Johnston, the author of “From Slave Ship to Harvard: Yarrow Mamout and the History of an African American Family” is speaking about Yarrow Mamout and his family at Little Falls Library in Bethesda from 1 to 2 p.m. Mamout was brought to Maryland on a slave ship in 1752 and was enslaved for 40 years. When Mamout was 60 years old, he became a free man and acquired a house in Georgetown. Stop by Little Falls Library to hear Johnston discuss his book and Mamout’s remarkable life. 5. Self Advocacy:  The City of Rockville is hosting a self-advocacy workshop at the Rockville Senior Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Stop by the free workshop to learn about communicating personal needs to others.
