Five Things to Know for Feb. 28 in Montgomery County

Today is Thursday, Feb. 28. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. MCM’s February Small Business Network:  David and Mikel Blair talk with host Kelly Leonard about “Navigating Life as a Couple in Business” at today’s event. Learn more and get your ticket, here.

2. Black History Month: Ralph Buglass will explain the struggle emancipated African Americans faced in Montgomery County to access public education, which was not extended to black children until a decade after it was first offered to white children. The presentation will also discuss the black schools built in the county, some of which still stand today.

3. Brews and Bulbs:  Staff from the Department of Environmental Protection will be at Silver Branch Brewing Co in Silver Spring today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Residents can swap out old incandescent or CFL light bulbs for up to three free LED light bulbs.

4. BOE Meeting: The Board of Education hosts a student town hall meeting at Montgomery Blair High School.

5. Opening Reception: Join artists and art-lovers to celebrate the opening of Strathmore’s three new exhibits,  Flora/Fauna; Surfacing; and Garden of Wonder at 7 p.m. in the Mansion.
