Five Things to Know for Aug. 8 in Montgomery County

Today is Thursday, Aug. 8. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Today is International Cat Day: This is for all the cat lovers! The International Fund for Animal Welfare created the day back in 2002.

2. AARP Smart Driver Class: Brush-up on driving skills, and learn about new state laws in Maryland that impact motorists. This class will take place at the Holiday Park Senior Center [3950 Ferrara Drive in Wheaton] from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Some insurance companies provide a discount for those who complete this course. Sign-up at the reception desk. Pay in class: cash, or check required. Fees: $20 or $15 with AARP card.

3. MOCO Students for Change Gun Violence Vigil: This vigil for victims of gun violence will take place at Lafayette Square Park [1601 Pennsylvania Ave NW in Washington, DC ] from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

4. Silver Spring Thursday Night Concert Series: The free outdoor concerts take place at 7 p.m. at the Plaza located at One Veterans Place in downtown Silver Spring. Today, The Soul Crackers (Motown Soul) will be performing. This will be the last concert for the series this summer.  Click here for more details. 

5. Tour Glenview Mansion Through Time: Today from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm join Peerless Rockville for a guided tour of Glenview Mansion in Rockville and learn its rich and fascinating history in this latest installment of the Glenview Mansion & Peerless Rockville Speaker Series.
