Detectives Investigate Four Carjackings in Under a Week in Downtown Silver Spring

Four armed carjackings have occurred in the downtown Silver Spring area since Sept. 19, the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) said.

Detectives continue to investigate the crimes and said in three incidents the victim’s car was left running and/or unattended. All four victims’ cars were later found abandoned in Washington, D.C. The carjackings occurred as follows, according to MCPD:

Sept. 19, 6:45 p.m., 8600 block of Cedar Street

  • A delivery driver was confronted by two suspects with handguns. One suspect demanded the victim’s car keys and fled in the stolen car while the other suspect fled in another car, according to MCPD.

Sept. 19, 9:43 p.m., 8700 block of Colesville Road

  • The victim left his car running and unlocked while he ran an errand and saw two suspects inside when he got back. Police said one displayed a handgun and the suspects fled in the car.

Sept. 22, 10 a.m., 8000 block of Georgia Avenue

  • The victim left his car while it was still running and was confronted by three suspects. The suspects, one of whom had a handgun, stole the car. Police also said the suspects assaulted the victim.

Sept. 24, 6:03 p.m., 8700 block of Georgia Avenue

  • The victim left his car running while he went to the ATM and came back to find three suspects, one of whom pointed a handgun at the victim. The three suspects fled in the stolen car.

MCPD said detectives are investigating if the carjackings may have been done by the same suspects. The department asks anyone with relevant information to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5100. Callers who want to stay anonymous can call the Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-8477 or reach them online. Crime Solvers may pay up to $10,000 for information that results in an arrest.

Police offered safety tips to avoid car theft like: keep your car keys with you at all times and never leave your car running if it’s unattended.
