County’s COVID-19 Positivity Rate Dips Below 3% for First Time in 4 Months

The Maryland Department of Health reported 141 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Wednesday morning. The county’s cumulative case count is 62,767.

Montgomery County recorded two newly reported coronavirus-related fatalities Wednesday. The death toll is currently 1,354, the highest in the state.

As of Wednesday, 17 schools in the state are reporting COVID-19 cases, of those 17 two are located in Montgomery County. They include:

  • The Primary Day School in Bethesda reports eight cases.
  • Torah School of Greater Washington in Silver Spring reports two cases.

The county has a rolling seven-day average of 2.95% for positive COVID-19 tests, which is a decrease of 0.22 from Tuesday’s average rate of 3.17%. This is the first time the rate is below 3% since Oct. 28, 2020 when the rate was 2.95%. The county’s positivity rate is lower than in 16 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

With 1,354 fatalities, Montgomery County leads the state in total COVID-19 related fatalities but not in total cases. Prince George’s County has the most coronavirus cases in the state with 72,609 cases and 1,285 fatalities.

Somerset County located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore has the most cases per capita with 92.5 cases per 1,000 residents. Allegany County in the western region of the state has the second-highest cases per capita at 90.9 cases per 1,000 residents.

Wednesday the state recorded 862 new infections bringing the state’s cumulative case count to 378,490.

There are currently 960 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 across the state as of Wednesday morning. This is nearly 1,000 fewer hospitalizations than the pandemic high of 1,957 that occurred on Jan. 11.

There are 17 schools in the state reporting COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday morning.

Wednesday the state recorded 27 newly reported deaths, bringing the state death toll to 7,607.

The state reported a rolling seven-day average of 3.8% for positive COVID-19 tests Wednesday. This is a decrease of 0.1 from Tuesday’s rate of 3.9% and the third straight day the rate remains below 4%.
