County Leaders to Discuss Eviction Protection for Tenants

Montgomery County leaders are inviting residents to learn more about legislation underway that aims to protect tenants from certain evictions.

“Right now in the state of Maryland,  tenants can be given notification 60 days before their lease ends that the landlord will not renew,” said Matt Losak, executive director for the Montgomery County Renters Alliance, Inc.  “It doesn’t matter how long the tenant has been there, they can be evicted for no reason at all.”

During the 2018 Maryland General Assembly Session, Del. Jheanelle Wilkins (D-20) joined other members representing Montgomery County in Maryland’s House of Delegates in considering a bill that prohibits a landlord from evicting a tenant from leased premises in Montgomery County in the absence of just cause.

As a result of the legislation, the Delegation will study the issues surrounding just cause evictions and its impact.

“This is the first time in County history, the state delegation will hold a summer study on just cause eviction protection,” Losak said.  “This is a big deal since nearly 40 percent of the county now lives in rental housing, up from around 24 percent in 2007.”

The study will take place at the Silver Spring Civic Center, located at 1 Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring on Aug. 14. The program begins at 6:30 p.m.
