Council to Vote on Raising Minimum Wage
County workers may soon be getting a raise if the County Council votes to pass a bill that would increase the minimum wage in three phases, from the current $7.25 an hour to $11.50 an hour in July 2016.
The bill, sponsored by councilmembers Marc Elrich, Valerie Ervin and Council President Nancy Navarro, will be addressed by the Montgomery County Council at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The council met with the Health and Human Services Committee on Nov. 21 and made several amendments to the original bill including delaying the effective date to Oct. 1, 2014, indexing the rate to inflation only if the State does, applying the County minimum wage to tipped employees, and deleting the credit for employer-provided health insurance and exempt workers who are less than 19 and work 20 hours or less per week.
“Montgomery County residents would not need to rely on our social safety net and anti-poverty programs if every worker had the opportunity to earn a fair, living wage,” said Council President Nancy Navarro in an emailed newsletter. “This is an opportunity for Montgomery County to lead. It is a chance to show wavering lawmakers in Annapolis and in Congress that standing up for working families is the right thing to do.”
But not everyone was happy with the committee’s changes to the proposed bill.
“Very disappointed that the council committee just recommended to exclude youth under 18 from protections of the minimum wage,” said councilmember Hans Riemer on Twitter following the work session. “Not only will youth lack the protection but employers may hire them instead of needier non-youth workers.”
