Bernie Scholarships Awarded at Dinner

The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program (BSAP) held its awards dinner Thursday at the Executive Office Building Cafeteria. Thirty-eight Montgomery County scholars were honored with a dinner, a program, and words of encouragement by our Community Service Awardee and Keynote Speaker, the Honorable Craig Rice, County Councilman.
The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program’s mission is to provide financial assistance for college or training programs to graduating high school seniors and other adults who are low-income and live in subsidized housing in Montgomery County. Recipients of the Bernie Scholarship may use their awards for any education related expense, including tuition, books, fees, computer equipment, transportation and/or child care.
This year is the 22nd year that the BSAP has been awarding scholarships. In 1996, it awarded four scholarships, and in 2017 it awarded 38 scholarships of $1,750 each, bringing the total amount spent on 461 scholarships to $536,200. These scholarships enable awardees to fulfill educational goals, improve job prospects and stabilize families. BSAP scholars often have amazing stories of perseverance and resilience in their quest for an education.
Bernie Tetreault retired after 24 years of service as the executive director of the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County. Bernie and some friends sought to identify a special way to continue to give to the community that he served for so long. As a result, they established the Bernie Scholarship Awards Program which assists low income Montgomery students to achieve their academic dreams.
