‘Shirley & Walter’ Sculpture Memorializes Two DC Sports Legends
Two of Washington DC’s sports icons were memorialized on Saturday at Povich Field in Bethesda. The ‘Shirley & Walter’ bronze sculpture was unveiled in front of an invitation-only crowd of about 100 people at the home of Big Train Baseball. Speakers included Maury Povich, son of Shirley, Hank Thomas, grandson of Walter Johnson, ESPN baseball analyst and Walter Johnson High School alum Tim Kurkjian and sculptor Tony Mendes.
The sculpture, depicting Povich, a legendary sports columnist for The Washington Post for 75 years, interviewing Walter Johnson, the Washington Senators Hall of Famer who many claim is the greatest pitcher of all time, is located in a newly designed plaza near the entrance to the field.
