Five Things to Know for Oct. 9 in Montgomery County
Today is Wednesday, Oct. 9 and people of the Jewish faith are continuing to celebrate Yom Kippur, which is known as the Day of Atonement. It’s considered the holiest day of the year for Jewish people.
Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.
1. No School for MCPS Students: Since it’s Yom Kippur, Montgomery County Public Schools students and teachers have the day off.
2. Eagle Battalion Charity Golf Event: Students involved in Magruder High’s Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program are hosting a charity golf event today to help fund their program. The event is at the Blue Mash Golf Course in Laytonsville.
3. Beneficial Bats in the Belfry: Kerry Wixted from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is giving a talk on the benefits of bats tonight at Montgomery Parks’ Meadowside Nature Center tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event is intended for ages 14 and up and people can register for the event through Active Montgomery.
Bats are part of Halloween decor. But, they are not as spooky as other fanged seasonal characters.

4. Adventure Day at Thomas Farm Community Center: Since students have the day off, they can participate in Adventure Day at Thomas Farm Community Center, located at 700 Fallsgrove Drive, in Rockville. The event is for children ages 6 through 11 and is from 9 to 3 p.m. Learn more about the event and register here.
5. Free Tai Chi Workshop: From 9 to 10 a.m., Dr. Phoenix Liu is hosting a free Tai Chi workshop at West Field Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The workshop is open to people of all ages and will take place on the lower level of the mall near the Nordstrom wing. More details can be found here.
