Five Things to Know for July 16 in Montgomery County

Today is Tuesday, July 16 and the heat and humidity are on the rise. Montgomery County activates the extreme heat plan from 2 to 7 p.m. today.

1. 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11: The Saturn V rocket launched 50 years ago today at 9:32 a.m. from the Kennedy Space Center. Apollo 11 carried the first astronauts to walk on the moon. An estimated one million people, including half the members of the United States Congress, watched the launch at the Space Center.

2. Council in Session: Montgomery County Council meets this morning at 10:30 a.m. Here’s a look at today’s agenda. Three bills are scheduled to be introduced including the Accessory Dwelling Units (22-19)Cybersecurity Investment Incentive Tax Credit Supplement, and the Landlord-Tenant Relations (24-19).

3. Rockville Skate Park Design Workshop:  The city of Rockville is in the design stage of the construction of a new Skate Park. A workshop will take place at Rockville City Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Or provide input by completing the survey online, here.

4. Yoga in the Park: The City of Gaithersburg is sponsoring a free Yoga class tonight at 7 p.m. at the Concert Pavilion (as long as weather permits). Here’s more information.

5. Knock Down the House: Screening, Discussion and Reception: Takoma Park Mobilization and DoTheMostGood host a screening of Netflix’s Knock Down the House at the AFI Silver Theater. Hear from and meet progressive local women who have run for office. The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available, here.
