Five Things to Know for Jan. 16 in Montgomery County

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 16. Here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Gubernatorial Inauguration: Today is Governor Larry Hogan’s Inauguration. The pre-inaugural service starts at 9 a.m. on the North Lawn of the Maryland State House in Annapolis. The Swearing-In Ceremony of Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford and Governor Larry Hogan will start at 12 p.m, and there will be a public receiving line at 1:30 p.m. Tickets to the event are not required, but seating is provided on a “first come, first served” basis. The inauguration will feature prominent Montgomery County figures such as former County Executive Ike Leggett.

2. Planning Board 2019 Winter Speaker Series: The Montgomery County Planning Board is launching its 2019 Winter Speaker Series, which focuses on general plan updates. It’s a free event, open to the public, that’s held at the Planning Department on 8787 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Go to the Planning Board’s website for more information about who’s speaking at the event tonight.

3. Operating Budget Forum: Today County Executive Marc Elrich is holding a forum with county residents to discuss the Fiscal Year 2020 Operating Budget Priorities. The forum tonight starts at 7 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

4. The Social Life of DNA: The NIH Director’s Lecture Series will explore the topic, “The Social Life of DNA.” The series provides a platform for some of the biggest names in biomedical and behavioral research to share their research to the public. Today’s speaker is Alondra Nelson, Ph.D., M.Phil., the president of the social science research council at Columbia University. The lecture will be presented at in Building 10 of at the Masur Auditorium in NIH Bethesda from 3 to 4 p.m.

5. MCDCC Listening Session: Montgomery County Democratic Party is hosting a listening session at Kensington Park Library to discuss lessons that can be learned from the local 2018 election. The event is from 7:30 until 9 p.m. Here’s more information.
