Thanksgiving is less than a week away and the Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade takes place Saturday at 10 a.m.  Susan Hoffman previews the parade in this short video to the right.

Rockville Town Square is the place to be Saturday evening to enjoy a holiday tree lighting, live music, and an ice skating performance. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m.

  • The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival continues at the county fairgrounds in Gaithersburg this weekend.
  • Montgomery Recreation hosts their first Turkey Trot and Food Drive at the Mid-County Community Recreation Center. Price to participate is a donation to Manna Food Center.
  • The Thanksgiving Parade in Silver Spring starts from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street at 10 a.m.  The parade will be televised live on NewsChannel 8. Free parking is available in the public garages on Wayne Avenue, Sligo Avenue, and Cameron Street.
  • Montgomery Parks’ Music on the Farm series returns with the Jeff Reynolds Trio at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood. Expect great music, campfires to stay warm, hot cocoa and s’mores.
  • Sly & The Family Stone founding members Jerry Martini and Greg Errico celebrate the funk band’s 50th anniversary with a concert at Montgomery College’s Parilla Performing Arts Center in Rockville.
  • Montgomery Playhouse presents the mystery Postmortem at Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
  • The American Dance Institute presents Okwui Okpokwasili in Rockville at 8 p.m.
  • The Hot Mess Burlesque present classic burlesque, acrobats, stilt walkers, lingerie models, aerialists, performance artists, tango dancers, comics, hoop artists and the occasional flaming tuba to the music of the Texas Chainsaw Horns at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club.
  • Olney Theatre presents the musical Mary Poppins.
  • The Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra performs its first full-length small ensemble showcase concert at BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.
  • The Washington Balalaika Society perform at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre in Rockville.
  • The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Music Center at Strathmore.

Sunday, November 20: 

  • Today is the last day of the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival at the county fairgrounds in Gaithersburg.
  • Celebrate entrepreneurship and find unique gifts at the Empowered Women International’s (EWI) Artisan Marketplace at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Watch the video to the right to meet Mariam Mohamed and learn about her experiences with the EWI.
  • Glen Echo’s Holiday Art Show & Sale is open weekends and other select days through Jan. 8.
  • Today is the last performance of the mystery Postmortem at Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
  • Olney Theatre presents the musical Mary Poppins.
  • Three new exhibits are on display at Strathmore today through Dec. 31. A public opening reception takes place today at 2 p.m.
  • The Brooklyn-based The Pop Ups perform a children’s concert at AMP by Strathmore in North Bethesda.
  • Hawaii-born Shimabukuro performs at The Music Center at Strathmore at 7:30 p.m
