Hoggle Toddlers Now Missing Six Months
As the family marks six months this weekend since toddlers Sarah and Jacob Hoggle have been missing, their mother charged in their disappearance continues to be found incompetent by the mental health hospital where she is being treated, according to her latest evaluation.
Catherine Hoggle is a patient at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, where she is being treated for mental illness. She has been found incompetent by medical staff there to stand trial for two child neglect misdemeanors charges and obstruction and hindering an investigation charges filed against her. A judge accepted that decision. On Thursday, she got an updated evaluation that did not include information that would change her status, according to her attorney David Felsen.
“Her condition has not materially changed,” Felsen told MyMCMedia Thursday.
According to the Maryland online Case Search, Hoggle is scheduled to appear in court March 13 for a trial in the case. Felsen said that court date will likely be cancelled since her mental status has not been changed. He said he’s spoken with Hoggle “periodically.”
“She is in the throws of some heavy duty mental health stuff,” Felsen said. “I think she is having a difficult time.”
Difficult doesn’t begin to describe what it’s been like for Sarah and Jacob’s father, Troy Turner. He’s been relentless in his search for his children who were last seen with their mother Sept. 7 and 8 and continues to believe they are alive.
“When you hear six months it is a reminder of how long it has really been, but that is more for people outside of myself to see we still need help with searches. The community has been strong in support and I hope they stay that way until they come home,” Turner told MyMCMedia.
Turner said he has not seen Catherine Hoggle recently but spoke with her about two weeks ago.
“She said she wants to bring them home and repeats that the kids are safe,” he said. But, Turner said he doesn’t expect to get much information from Catherine Hoggle.
“This was a criminal act not a mental break,” he said. “I talk to her, I know her; and she knows what she was doing was wrong when she took them. She is hiding behind her issues. She has mental health issues but those issues aren’t the reason she did this.”
This weekend, Turner said he won’t be marking the disappearance of his children with anything other than a continued effort to search for them.
“I feel like the same as I did when they were missing five months and 29 days- every day I miss them more,” he said. “l won’t throw a party on the day they went missing, I will mark the day I find them.”
Meanwhile, Capt. Darren Francke, who is leading the investigation, told MyMCMedia the volume of tips in the case is very low.
“We are continuing to run out tips we get. Our main interest is seeing what is happening with Catherine and her treatment. We believe Catherine is the key to what happened to the children,” Francke said.
But, police are no closer to actually finding Sarah and Jacob now than when they went missing.
“I think we are further in our minds of knowing some of what happened to the children,” Francke said. “I don’t think we are any closer to actually finding Sarah and Jacob because Catherine and her attorney hold the key to bring this case to a close. When they are ready to do so then we are more than willing to listen.”
